Both Rotterdam and Amsterdam - very busy because of all the tourists - are within close range. From Columbus B&B it takes you 25-30 minutes to go to Rotterdam by car or train, and to Amsterdam it takes you 50 to 60 minutes. The Netherlands Congress Building and UN institutions like the International Court of Justice (ICJ) also knows as the Peace Palace or Vredespaleis, the Yugoslavia Tribunal ICTY and OPCW, are all within 15 to 20 minutes walking distance. The Fortis Circus Theater and the Holland Casino in Scheveningen are also within close range. Tram and bus stops are within a minutes walking distance, and parking is free in the whole neighborhood.
The 'Columbus' House, which was built in 1903, has been tastefully refurbished and redecorated preserving plaster ceilings with 'flower baskets' and parquet floors. The 'Columbus' House has two big double bedrooms. The 'Yellow' room with a lovely 'blue wisteria' terrace and the green suite.
The rooms have cable television with all european stations, and free wireless high speed internet access (Wifi) is available. Breakfast is served in the dining room from 8 until 10.30. Self-service is also possible for early breakfasts. It is also possible to have a late check out. In that case you will be served a brunch from 13 to 15 hours. In that case you can stay in your room until 5 o-clock in the afternoon. There is no desk clerk on duty to await your arrival, so it is important that we know what time to expect you. Het ontbijt is van 8 tot 10.30 uur in de eetkamer. U kunt ook zelf uw onbijt maken indien u vroeger wilt opstaan.
Verder is het ook mogelijk om later uit te checken, namelijk om 5 uur ‘s-middags. U krijgt dan in plaats van een ontbijt een brunch geserveerd tussen 13 en 15 uur. By far The Netherlands cannot compete with England with respect to the number of Bed and Breakfasts (+/- 3.300), but slowly nowadays the concept is gaining more and more popularity in The Netherlands too. Although not as well organized as in England or even France – where the Bed and Breakfasts are called ‘Chambre d’Hote’ or ‘gite’, in general the Dutch Bed and Breakfasts offer a reasonable alternative for the regular hotels and hostels. Regardless of how they call themselves for instance Lodging, Exclusive Bed and Breakfast, Luxurious Bed & Breakfast, Exclusive Bed and Breakfast, Exclusive Guesthouse or Luxury accommodations, they all offer the same concept: a good place to stay for a reasonable price, and a friendly word ‘free of charge’.
